Major OB-GYN Instructions Following Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP)

       This information is intended to provide a general overview of the LEEP procedure and may not apply in each individual case.        Even though the LEEP has many advantages over other methods of treating precancerous lesions, it does not assure an absolute cure. It is important that you keep your follow-up appointments, especially for the first two years. If your pap smears continue to be abnormal, additional treatment may be necessary. Please feel free to talk with your physician if you have any questions or require further information or instructions.

After a LEEP is performed, it is important to follow these instructions:

    1. Do not engage in sexual intercourse for 3-4 weeks.

    2. Avoid any heavy lifting for 3-4 weeks.

    3. Do not use tampons or insert anything into the vagina for 3-4 weeks. Use sanitary napkins

        to protect your clothing.

    4. If spotting or bleeding continue beyond one week, pleae call the office at 398-0193.

    5. If you develop bleeding with clots, please call the office at 398-0193.

    6. If you have severe abdominal pain, fever, foul vaginal discharge or odor, please call

        the office at 398-0193.

    7. It is very important to return to the office for your follow-up visit in two weeks to ensure

        that the problem has been adequately treated.
