The statistics are alarming and the consequences fearsome.

We believe the cure is simple: prevention!

Left unchecked, present trends in growing levels of childhood obesity predict a whole host of diseases that once only appeared in adults. These include heart disease, diabetes, orthopedic problems, liver disease, cancer, depression, and others. To help prevent childhood obesity, Major Pediatrics recommends three easy-to-implement steps. Parents and caregivers can use these immediately, they work!

Reduce the Risk for Obesity:  Healthcare professionals can provide three feeding recommendations to parents and caregivers at well child visits (4,6,9,12,15,18,24,and 36 months)

The Major Easy 3

1. Drink milk with meals

Breast milk or formula under 1 year of age

2. Offer only water for refreshment

No sugar-sweetened beverages, including sodas and juice

3. Eat meals and snacks at the table

Avoid eating anywhere else, especially not in front of the television or while playing video games/computer.

By reducing unnecessary caloric intake and changing how (and where) children consume food, the Major Easy 3 program can achieve critical healthy lifestyle habits (and changes) at a very early age. If this initiative is successful, young children will grow into teenage life and ultimately adulthood without habits that can result in serious healthcare challenges later in life.

Of course, the program can be used with additional nutritional and behaviorally focused information, but the initial program will focus on three simple steps leading to obesity prevention. The Major Healthcare Partners (MHP) program can operate simultaneously with other existing obesity prevention programs.

The Major Easy 3 initiative will use the MHP Electronic Health Records (EHR) system to track patient Body Mass Index (BMI) history, thus implementing a meaningful use element of the EHR as required by new federal healthcare standards. This EHR data also will be used to help medical professionals easily see trends and progress.
